Network+
Certification Curriculum
Course
Overview
The Computing Technology Industry Association
(CompTIA) has developed this vendor-neutral
IT certification program. It is intended
to test skills required of a network technician,
who needs to know more than an A+ industry
novice but is not yet a MCSE/CNE network
expert.
This
curriculum consists of three courses.
This
course is mapped to the CompTia Network+
certification program and prepares learners
for exam N10-002.
Learn
To
-
Sequence the stages in the evolution of
computer networking.
- Match
the computer network components with their
functions.
- Identify
uses of computer networks for companies
and individuals.
- Match
network connectivity devices with their
functions.
- Identify
the features and functions of Network
Interface Cards (NICs).
- Identify
functions and features of hubs. Identify
features of the Open Systems Interconnection
(OSI) model.
- Identify
differences between the Transmission Control
Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and
the OSI model.
- Identify
features of media access control (MAC)
addressing.
- Identify
features of Dynamic Host Configuration
Protocol (DHCP) and Bootstrap Protocol
(BootP).
- Identify
features of Domain Name System (DNS).
- Identify
features of the Windows Internet Naming
Service (WINS). Identify capabilities
of UNIX and Linux servers.
- Identify
capabilities of NetWare servers.
- Identify
capabilities of Windows 2000 and Windows
NT servers.
- Identify
corporate standards that apply to elements
of a network configuration.
- Identify
benefits of documenting network changes.
- Identify
factors to be considered when implementing
software changes.
- Identify
guidelines for troubleshooting network
problems.
- Select
factors to be considered when identifying
a network problem.
Audience
Prerequisites and assumed competencies:
This certification is targeted towards two
groups. The first group is Network Administrators
with very little experience. The second
group is technical professionals from a
variety of fields who want to improve their
effectiveness by learning more about the
basics of networking. Typical duties performed
are supporting existing networks, planning
LANs, and developing technical solutions,
which incorporate a network component. A+
Certification, which CompTIA also sponsors,
can be used as a prerequisite, but it is
not necessary. A+ Certification certifies
the knowledge of microcomputer hardware
service technicians with six months of on-the-job
experience. The Network+ audience is defined
as someone who would work under the direction
of a network administrator; it is an entry
level IT certification program that fills
the gap between A+ and MCSE/CNE. Recommended
prerequisites are A+ certification or equivalent
knowledge. A Network+ professional can be
expected to be able to install a client
with an emphasis on TCP/IP.
